Dudinha and I talked one day about how cool it would
be to travel abroad and live an experience that would change our lives. What
started as an idea materialized in a dream: to go to Africa as volunteers.
The place at first did not matter, what we wanted was
be able to help those in need while knew cultures of other countries. Our main
focus was to take care of animals, which made our list of options decrease, the
next step would be to know how far we were willing to go, well, anywhere. After
research and conversations, we realized that caring for lions in Africa would
be a great idea.
This kind of voluntary trip includes programs for all
ages and tastes, and gives people the opportunity to explore South Africa being
more than just a tourist: the volunteers are immersed in the culture, animals and
the lifestyle of the region.
As you imagine, the biggest attractions (in our point
of view) to visit in South Africa, are the large reserves inhabited by hundreds
of African animals, including the famous Big Five - rhino, elephant, leopard,
lion and buffalo. Moreover, as it comes to South Africa, you can still exercise
your English, go shopping; explore the local history, visit safaris and more.
For example, the manager Raffaella Monteiro, 29, just
wanted to take a vacation from the hectic financial markets in which she
operates. Without company because her friends were unavailable, she saw in the
volunteer program a good opportunity to travel. "Maybe you do not know
museums, or spend days lying on a beach paradise, but you feel very relaxed
because helping others eliminate stress. I thought that I would teach many
things, but I was the one that really learned. "
